Sit Ins and Walk Outs
Shirley Sims was a student at Dunbar school until its closure in 1953, after which she attended Flagstaff Middle School. In 1958, Sims, who was a youth member of the NAACP, was one of ten students chosen to participate in a sit-in at a Southside restaurant. Sims remembers being given $5 in case they were actually served at the restaurant.
In 1962, while Sims was attending Flagstaff High School, she was involved in a student walkout. During her senior year, the prom king and queen were being elected. The student that was elected prom king was African-American, while the prom queen was white. After hearing that the prom king was African-American the prom queen refused the title of prom queen. This prompted backlash among the students of Flagstaff High school. The students quickly organized a walkout of their school in protest of the prom court situation.
