Sturgeon Cromer
Cromer was born in Safford, Arizona, in 1908. Cromer attended Arizona State Teacher's College in the late 20s and early 30s. After graduating in 1932, Cromer took a teaching position in Globe, Arizona, where he lived briefly as a child. In 1947 Cromer moved back to Flagstaff and accepted the position of Superintendent of Flagstaff public schools. Cromer began working with Wilson Riles, principal of Dunbar school, to desegregate Flagstaff schools. In 1952, Cromer and Riles succeeded in desegregating Flagstaff School two years before the landmark court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas.
