The Church of the Nativity
The Church of the Nativity is a Catholic church in Flagstaff that was built in 1895. From the time it was built the church adopted an unofficial policy of segregation. Often when members of the Hispanic community attempted to attend the church the would find that the pews were all reserved. The pews would have the names of all the white community members on them, leaving no seats for anyone else.
Due to the mistreatment many Hispanics experience, they decided to build their own Catholic church. In the late 1920s Flagstaff's Hispanic community built Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. It was a church built out of necessity, not out of desire. Many Hispanics simply wanted to be allowed to attend the Church of the Nativity.
