Challenging Father Alboy
Father Alboy was a French missionary, who for a time, was in charge of the Church of the Nativity. Tomas Hernandez described him as prejudiced toward Mexicans. One day Tomas, and his friend Tony Perez, went into the Church of the Nativity and sat down at one of the pews. Soon somebody told them those seats were reserved and they couldn't sit there. Tomas fired back by saying, "This is a house of God and we have a right to honor him just like anyone else." Soon more church staff attempted to kick the children out of the church. Eventually, people started filing into the church to attend service; the church staff became embarrassed and let the children stay. The two boys would attend the church a couple more times after that, but would receive glares from Father Alboy. Soon the two children stopped attending the Church of the Nativity because of the resentment they felt toward the people about the situation.
