Wilson Riles
Wilson Riles was born in the backwoods of Louisiana. By the time he was 12 years old, he had lost both of his parents. Eventually he was sent to live with relatives in Flagstaff. Riles found himself fresh out of finishing high school in a new town with no idea of what he wanted to do. One day he stumbled upon a one-room segregated school, and met a teacher that would have a great affect on his life--that teacher was Mrs. Murdock. She paved the way for Riles to attend NAU, then called Arizona Teachers College, were he would get his degree. After graduating from NAU Riles returned to that same school and began his teaching career. Riles would dedicate his career to helping Flagstaff's African-American population. In 1952 Riles teamed up with Flagstaff superintendent Sturgeon Cromer to desegregate Flagstaff public schools.
